Our Commitment to Diversity

As a brummie business, we’re well aware of the benefits that diversity can bring to a community. Our home city is one of our countries’ most diverse cities, with over one third of people in Birmingham identifying as non-white, a larger proportion than any other major city in the UK. Over 30 different languages are spoken here every day, and our cultural diversity is something which makes Birmingham richer and sets us apart.

In the tech industry, we want to see this diversity reflected in the people who make up our industry. A recent report from Tech Nation revealed 50% of workers in the labour market as a whole are women, but in tech, it’s half that, at 26%. Despite 20% of people living in the UK identifying as BAME, only 15.2% of people working in the industry identify this way.

For full disclosure, at Vanti, just over 30% of our workforce are women, and 28% of them identify as BAME. While we don’t legally have to publish our diversity stats, we feel that in the spirit of transparency and accountability that it is right that we do so.

Despite our workforce being more diverse than the average tech company, we don’t want to pat ourselves on the back and stop there. We understand that there is much more work to do for us to create a truly diverse and inclusive workplace, and indeed a wider industry.

As part of the tech industry, we want to play a proactive role in ensuring we are offering and promoting opportunities for those from minority backgrounds to work within the industry.

Much like Birmingham as a city, Vanti also understands that we are much better for increased diversity. By creating a team with different life experiences and cultural backgrounds, we benefit from creative and shared thinking which fuels innovation, creativity, and an environment where everyone can feel safe to express their true selves.

So, what are we going to do about it? As you may be aware, we are progressing with our application to become a B-Corp and have already received accreditation that we are B-Corp certified pending. B Corporations are companies that meet high standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.

To be fully approved, we must meet several standards on diversity and inclusion, and we are fully committed to meeting those. We also plan to set up a diversity and inclusion group which will meet regularly to discuss issues, identify opportunities, and put together a strategy to continuously assess and improve as a business when it comes to diversity.

We also understand that we need to educate young people about the opportunities available to them. It’s why we try to support groups like Our Smart Brum at events like Birmingham Tech Week to spread the message about what we do, how people can join us, and what career opportunities there are at a business like ours.

The tech industry is fast moving and hugely reliant on innovative brains who can deliver creative solutions to complex problems. Unblocking opportunities within the industry to those who might not know about them is crucial to its success, and we’re fully committed to playing our part in closing the diversity gap.
