We love supporting exciting events that take place in our home city of Birmingham, which is why we’re so pleased to be sponsoring TEDxBrum – a day-long event that provides a platform for some of today’s most inspired thinkers.
This year’s TEDxBrum will take place on Sunday 15th October at the iconic Birmingham Hippodrome, where over 1800 audience members will be inspired by a range of incredible speakers and performers as they take the stage to share their thoughts and ideas on this year’s theme of perspectives.
This is a topic close to the hearts of Team Vanti as we’ve spent a lot of time looking inwards over the last 12 months and considering each other’s perspectives on everything to do with how we live, work, and function as a company.
Here’s a little information about just a few of the talented individuals who attendees will no doubt be inspired by:
- Glenn Howells has built a strong reputation for designing innovative buildings and master planning. He has led Glenn Howells Architects (GHA) for the last 27 years to win numerous major design competitions and over 120 awards, and has been particularly influential in shaping Birmingham over the last 20 years. GHA have been involved in guiding Birmingham’s Big City Plan but also the major regeneration projects within it including Paradise, Brindley Place, Eastside/HS2. Since Glenn works in a similar space to us, we’re especially looking forward to hearing his perspective on his own experience in the built environment.
- Catherine Allen is widely regarded as a VR pioneer and thought leader, having led the creation of two of the BBC’s first VR experiences and providing her expert op-eds, comment and analysis to outlets including Wired magazine, The Guardian, Gizmodo, Tech Radar and Tech Crunch. She is part of the BAFTA VR advisory team and has judged VR for Sheffield Doc and Raindance film festivals.
- Travis Alabanza is a London-based performance artist and writer that uses poetry and more to scream about their survival as a Black, trans, gender non-conforming person in the UK. In the last three years, Travis has cemented themselves as one of the most prominent emerging queer voices in the arts and further afield, becoming artist in residence at the Tate for 2016/17.
This year’s event will include some added extras, including a TEDxBrum2 photography exhibition and #Perspectives Zine Library. There will also be chance for visitors to meet and chat with Birmingham-based artists over a spot of lunch as part of an Awkward Artists Cafe, plus the opportunity to visit the Perspectives Makerspace, which will be showcasing independent makers and their products.
If you’re coming along, make sure you take a look in your goody bag for our flyer – it’s designed to let people know how they can get involved with some of the exciting things that Vanti are working on at the moment. We’re always on the lookout for innovative thinkers to join our team, help us out with community, and contribute their own unique perspective.
Some members of Team Vanti (including our CEO Mike) will be there on the day – keep an eye out for the people in the Vanti hoodies! We’d love to talk to you, so please don’t be shy about saying hello.
We hope to see you there!
